"THREE YEARS IN THE CONFEDERATE HORSE ARTILLERY: A GUNNER IN CHEW'S BATTERY, STUART'S HORSE ARTILLERY, ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA" By George M. Neese published by The Neale Publishing Company 1911 reprint by Old South Books. Published originally in 1911, these are the memoirs of George Neese during his service as a gunner in Chew's Battery, Stuart's Horse Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Includes Brandy Station, Culpeper Court House, the Crater, being a prisoner at the infamous Point Lookout Prison in Maryland and more. A great primary source on the War for Southern Independence. Unionists and Secessionists, many of whom lived under the same roofs in this divided country. Around the country families were torn apart, people were thrown in jail without trial if they were suspected of being for the South here in Maryland, women could be charged with treason or prostitution if they wore "rebel colors" in their clothing or even failed to smile for union troops. A lynch mob in Hagerstown burned a newspaper office that dare publish an editorial saying that succession was not against the Constitution and that union was not worth the cost in lives and property that was being paid by the people of Maryland. At least one free Black, the ancestor of a friend of mine, left his farm in Maryland to go south and join the Army of Northern Virginia. He would receive a pension from Virginia until his death in the 1930's. The real reasons for why people choose to join either side in the war was much more complex than many biased modern "historians" will admit. This book adds another very interesting look at a terrible war. 236 pages. Brand new condition. Selling on other sites for over $60.00 in this brand new condition.

Thunderbolts Triumphant:The 362nd Fighter Group vs. Germany's WehrmachtBy Chris Bucholtz Hardcover: 272 Pages — Publisher: Casemate (2018) During World War II the Ninth Air Force comprised air-to-ground aviators, charged with destroying the enemy close to the front and below the clouds, often bringing them face to face with their German opponents. The 362nd Fighter Group, led by two very different leaders – the tough disciplinarian Col. Morton Magoffin and later the beloved motivator Col. Joe Laughlin – had one of the best track records in the Ninth Air Force. It destroyed over 5000 trucks, 350 tanks, 275 artillery pieces, 45 barges, and 600 locomotives. But this score came at a cost, as over the course of 15 months of combat in 1944 and 1945 more than 70 pilots were killed in action and in June 1944 alone 30 of their P-47 Thunderbolts were lost. The other groups jokingly referred to them as the "362nd Suicide Outfit". Thunderbolts Triumphant provides a narrative history of the group and gives a glimpse at the fascinating men who flew these missions and maintained the aircraft as they navigated Europe. Starting with the D-Day invasion, the group was the aerial artillery support for U.S. ground forces, first in Normandy, then in reducing the defenses around Brest, then in supporting the U.S. Third Army as it drove across France and Germany. Special emphasis is given to its most spectacular missions such as the breaching of the Dieuze Dam and its incredible performance during the Battle of the Bulge where it demolished much of the Sixth Panzer Armee as it tried to escape eastward. Illustrated with 150 black and white photographs and 24 color aircraft profiles, this is a fascinating and detailed history of a group that played a significant part in winning the air war.
